Taupō & Tongariro
Whakapapa ski field
New Zealand's largest ski area, located on the northern slopes of the active volcano, Mount Ruapehu.
About this place
Whakapapa offers a diverse range of terrain, from gentle slopes in its dedicated beginner area, Happy Valley, to challenging chutes and wide-open bowls for advanced skiers and boarders. The ski area sits within the dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park, providing the unique experience of skiing on an active volcano. The views across the central North Island from the upper slopes are immense on a clear day.
Outside of the ski season, Whakapapa is a destination for sightseeing and hiking. The Sky Waka gondola operates for sightseeing (weather permitting), transporting visitors up the mountain for incredible views and access to short alpine walks. This allows you to experience the volcanic landscape and its unique 'moon-like' environment without the snow.
