Taupō & Tongariro
Huka Falls
A powerful set of waterfalls on the Waikato River, where a huge volume of water thunders through a narrow rock canyon.
About this place
Just upstream from Taupō, the Waikato River, usually up to 100 metres wide, is forced through a narrow chasm of hard volcanic rock. This channel is only 15 metres across, creating a torrent of rushing blue-green water that bursts out over an 11-metre drop. The sheer volume and force of the water make for an impressive natural spectacle.
The falls are very accessible, with a footbridge right over the top offering excellent vantage points. There are also several viewing platforms along a short walking track on the riverbank. For a different perspective, you can walk or mountain bike along the scenic trail from Spa Thermal Park in Taupō to the falls lookout.

Practical tips
- A popular walk follows the river from Spa Thermal Park in Taupō to the Huka Falls lookout.
- For a close-up view, consider a jet boat or river cruise that travels to the base of the falls.
- The main carpark can get busy, so arriving earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon might be a good idea.
