Lake Taupō cruise

A boat trip on New Zealand's largest lake to see the impressive Ngātoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings.

About this place

Lake Taupō is a massive crater lake, roughly the size of Singapore, formed by a supervolcanic eruption centuries ago. A highlight of any cruise is visiting the Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings, a striking 14-metre-high carving of the navigator and high priest Ngātoroirangi, which is accessible only by water. The carvings were completed in the late 1970s and are a significant contemporary Māori cultural work.

Boat trips vary, from sailing yachts to larger catamarans, offering different experiences on the water. Most tours provide commentary on the lake's volcanic history and the cultural significance of the carvings. It’s a relaxing way to appreciate the scale of the lake and the surrounding scenery, including the distant peaks of Tongariro National Park on a clear day.

Practical tips

  • Choose a trip that suits your style – a sailing boat for a quiet experience or a larger motor cruiser for more amenities.
  • Bring a jacket or windbreaker, as it can be cooler on the water even on a warm day.
  • For keen kayakers, guided paddling trips to the carvings are also an option from various departure points.
