Te Mata Peak

Te Mata Peak offers spectacular 360-degree views across the Heretaunga Plains, Hawke's Bay coastline, and towards the Ruahine Ranges.

About this place

Rising 399 metres above sea level, the peak is a significant local landmark, rich in Māori legend. The 'Sleeping Giant' story tells of the chief Te Mata, with the shape of the peak representing his body. The park surrounding the peak protects unique ecosystems and features stands of towering redwood trees.

A winding road leads to the summit, making it accessible by vehicle, but the area is also a haven for walkers and mountain bikers. A network of well-maintained tracks caters to various fitness levels, from gentle strolls through the forest to more challenging hikes along the ridgeline. The views from the top on a clear day are truly expansive.
