Hawke's Bay

Gimblett Gravels wineries

The Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District is a highly acclaimed sub-region in Hawke's Bay known for producing world-class red wines.

About this place

This unique area is defined by its soils – the gravelly, free-draining former bed of the Ngaruroro River, exposed after a major flood in the 1860s. These stony soils absorb and radiate heat, creating a microclimate ideal for ripening Bordeaux-style grape varieties like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. The district's boundaries are strictly defined by this specific soil type.

Many of New Zealand's most prestigious wineries are located here, offering visitors the chance to sample premium red blends and Syrah. You can explore the district via a self-drive tour or by joining a guided wine tour. Some wineries have cellar doors for tastings, and a few also feature excellent restaurants that pair local food with their wines.
