Hawke's Bay

Napier Art Deco

Napier is renowned worldwide for its unique concentration of 1930s Art Deco architecture, rebuilt after a devastating earthquake.

About this place

The city of Napier was almost completely levelled by the 7.8 magnitude Hawke's Bay earthquake in 1931. In the two years that followed, the town was rebuilt in the popular architectural styles of the time: Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission, and predominantly Art Deco. This rapid, stylistically unified rebuild resulted in a cityscape that is architecturally unique.

Today, you can explore this heritage through guided or self-guided walks, admiring geometric patterns, sunburst motifs, and pastel-coloured facades. The Art Deco Trust plays a key role in preserving this history and offers resources for visitors. The annual Art Deco Festival is a major event, drawing people from all over to celebrate the era.
