Stewart Island
New Zealand's third-largest island, Rakiura is a sanctuary for native wildlife and a paradise for walkers and birdwatchers.
About this place
Over 85% of Stewart Island/Rakiura is designated as a National Park, protecting its vast tracts of unspoiled wilderness. The island is characterised by lush, regenerating forest, rugged coastline, and a profound sense of tranquility. Oban, the only settlement, is a small, welcoming village nestled in Halfmoon Bay that serves as the island's hub.
Rakiura is one of the best places in New Zealand to see kiwi in their natural habitat, and they are uniquely active here during the day. The island is criss-crossed with walking tracks for all abilities, from short strolls around Oban to multi-day tramps like the Rakiura Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks. It offers a true escape into nature.
Time needed
A minimum of 2-3 days
Best time
Summer (December to February) generally offers the most settled weather for walking and outdoor activities.
Practical tips
- Transport to the island via ferry or flight, as well as accommodation, should be booked well in advance, particularly for travel during summer.
- The weather is famously unpredictable. Pack warm layers, reliable rain gear, and sturdy footwear regardless of the season.
- For kiwi spotting, a head torch with a red-light setting is essential as it is less likely to startle the birds.
