Purakaunui Falls
An iconic, tiered waterfall set within lush native beech forest, widely considered one of the Catlins' most picturesque sights.
About this place
The falls are reached via a short, easy 10-minute walk from the car park. The well-maintained track meanders through a beautiful forest of silver beech and podocarp trees, descending gently towards the sound of the cascading water. The path is suitable for most people and concludes at a wooden viewing platform at the base of the falls.
Purakaunui Falls are a classic three-tiered cascade, tumbling 20 metres over a series of rock faces. The sight of the water flowing through the dense, moss-covered native bush makes it a favourite spot for photographers. It’s an image that has come to represent the natural beauty of the Catlins region.

Practical tips
- The track and viewing platform can become slippery, especially after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
- For photography, an overcast day often provides better, more even lighting, which helps capture the detail of the water and surrounding forest.
- Allow extra time to enjoy the walk itself and appreciate the impressive native trees along the path.
