Te Puia

Te Puia is a significant cultural and geothermal centre, home to the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute and the famous Pōhutu Geyser.

About this place

Situated in the Te Whakarewarewa Valley, Te Puia combines geothermal wonders with a deep connection to Māori culture. It is the location of the Pōhutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, which erupts multiple times a day. Visitors can observe bubbling mud pools and silica terraces formed by the mineral-rich waters.

The site is also a centre for preserving traditional Māori arts, with national schools for carving, weaving, and stone carving. You can see artisans at work and view finished pieces in the galleries. The grounds also include a kiwi conservation centre, offering a chance to see New Zealand's national bird in a nocturnal enclosure.
