Rotorua & Bay of Plenty
Mount Maunganui
Mount Maunganui, or Mauao, is an iconic extinct volcanic cone at the end of a peninsula, offering popular walking tracks and panoramic views of the Bay of Plenty.
About this place
Mauao holds deep cultural significance for local Māori iwi and is a protected historic reserve. There are several tracks to choose from, including a gentle base track that circles the mountain and offers close-up views of the coastline. This walk is relatively flat and suitable for all fitness levels.
For more of a challenge, steeper tracks lead to the 232-metre summit. From the top, you are rewarded with 360-degree views encompassing the Tauranga harbour, the Pacific Ocean, and the long stretch of Maunganui Beach. The walk to the summit is a popular activity for locals and visitors alike, particularly at sunrise.
Time needed
1-2 hours, depending on the chosen track
Best time
It can be enjoyed year-round, but summer is especially popular for beach activities afterwards.
Practical tips
- Choose a track that matches your fitness level; the summit tracks are steep.
- Carry water, especially on a warm day, and wear sun protection.
