Putangirua Pinnacles
The Putangirua Pinnacles are an extraordinary geological formation of towering earth pillars, famously featured as a film location in The Lord of the Rings.
About this place
These badlands formations, known as 'hoodoos', were created over thousands of years by erosion from rain and wind. The result is a surreal landscape of gravel spires that create a unique and otherworldly atmosphere. Walking amongst the pinnacles gives you a real sense of their scale and the natural forces that shaped them.
There are a few walking tracks to explore the area, ranging from an easy walk up the streambed into the heart of the pinnacles to a more strenuous loop track that offers spectacular views from above. The site gained international fame as the 'Paths of the Dead' in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The Pinnacles are part of the Aorangi Forest Park, offering a glimpse into a raw and ancient landscape.
