Cape Palliser seal colony
Cape Palliser is home to the North Island's largest breeding colony of New Zealand fur seals, set against a rugged and dramatic coastal backdrop.
About this place
Located at the southernmost point of the North Island, the journey to Cape Palliser is a scenic drive along a wild coastline. The seal colony is spread out along the rocks, where you can observe these fascinating animals in their natural habitat. During the breeding season from November to January, you can see pups playing in rock pools.
Remember to keep a safe and respectful distance from the seals, as they are wild animals and can move surprisingly quickly. Nearby, the iconic red and white striped Cape Palliser Lighthouse stands watch over the coast. A climb up the 253 steps to its base is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Cook Strait and the surrounding landscape.
