Kaikōura
Whale watching
Kaikōura is one of the few places in the world where giant sperm whales can be seen year-round, thanks to the deep underwater canyon just offshore.
About this place
The Kaikōura Canyon is an extraordinary submarine feature that plunges to depths of over 1,200 metres very close to the coast. This deep, nutrient-rich water creates a perfect feeding ground for sperm whales, which dive deep to hunt for squid and other prey. Several local operators offer boat or flight-based tours to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
While sperm whales are the main attraction, other marine life is often spotted on these tours. You might see pods of dusky dolphins, migrating humpback whales (during winter months), or even the occasional orca. The tours are guided by knowledgeable crew who provide commentary on the local marine ecosystem and the behaviour of the animals.

Practical tips
- Book your tour in advance, especially during peak seasons like summer, as trips can fill up quickly.
- If you're prone to seasickness, take preventative measures before a boat trip, as the open ocean can be choppy.
- Dress in warm layers and bring a waterproof jacket, as it's always cooler out on the water, even on a sunny day.
