Kaikōura
Peninsula walkway
The Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway offers stunning coastal views and opportunities to see a thriving New Zealand fur seal colony up close.
About this place
This walk follows the shoreline and cliff tops of the peninsula, providing expansive views of the Seaward Kaikōura Range and the Pacific Ocean. The full loop takes a few hours, but there are shorter sections you can walk if you're short on time. The track is well-formed and suitable for most fitness levels, though there are some hills and steps along the way.
A highlight of the walk is the Point Kean seal colony, where fur seals can be seen lounging on the rocks right beside the car park and walkway. Remember to keep a safe and respectful distance from the wildlife at all times. The area is also rich in birdlife, including various species of seabirds, making it a great spot for nature lovers.

Practical tips
- Check the tide times before you go, as some lower sections of the track can be affected by high tide.
- Always stay on the marked track and maintain a distance of at least 20 metres from any seals you encounter.
- Wear sturdy walking shoes and bring water, snacks, and sun protection, as much of the track is exposed.
