Piha and the Waitākere Ranges

A rugged west coast region featuring a dramatic black-sand surf beach and dense native rainforest.

About this place

The Waitākere Ranges Regional Park is a vast area of native forest, dramatic coastline and waterfalls just west of Auckland's city centre. The ranges are historically significant for their role in protecting the region's water supply and for their rich biodiversity. The roads into the park are winding, so it pays to allow extra time for the journey.

Piha itself is a famous black-sand beach known for its powerful surf and the iconic Lion Rock, a volcanic monolith that divides the beach. It's a premier destination for experienced surfers and is patrolled by one of the country's most well-known surf lifesaving clubs. The currents here can be very strong, making it essential to heed safety advice.

Practical tips

  • Always swim between the red and yellow flags, as the surf and currents on the west coast can be powerful and unpredictable.
  • Check the Auckland Council website for the status of walking tracks before you go, as some may be closed for maintenance or to prevent the spread of kauri dieback disease.
  • Pack layers of clothing, including a rain jacket, as the weather in the Waitākere Ranges can change very quickly.
