Maungawhau / Mt Eden

Auckland's highest mainland volcanic cone, offering panoramic views of the city, its harbours, and the surrounding landscape.

About this place

Maungawhau / Mt Eden is a dormant volcano with immense cultural and geological significance. As one of the most prominent pre-European pā (fortified village) sites in the Auckland isthmus, its slopes are lined with extensive earthworks, including terraces and pits, that are still clearly visible today. The mountain is a revered ancestral site for local iwi (tribes).

A boardwalk has been constructed around the crater rim to protect the sensitive archaeological features while allowing visitors to enjoy the expansive views. From the summit, you can see across the Waitematā and Manukau Harbours, the central city skyline with the Sky Tower, and numerous other volcanic cones that dot the Auckland landscape.

  • Please respect the cultural significance of this tupuna maunga (ancestral mountain) by staying on the formal paths and boardwalks.
