Franz Josef Glacier
A remarkable river of ice that descends from the Southern Alps almost to sea level, flowing through temperate rainforest.
About this place
Known in Māori as Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere, Franz Josef Glacier is one of the most accessible glaciers in the world. Its rapid movement and termination at a low altitude make it a unique natural spectacle, where ice meets lush native forest.
The glacier is in a constant state of flux, advancing and retreating in response to weather patterns, which means access to the terminal face can change. A walk up the valley floor offers incredible views, while a guided heli-hike allows for the experience of walking directly on the ice.
Time needed
Half a day

Practical tips
- Check the latest track conditions and weather updates at the Westland Tai Poutini National Park Visitor Centre in town before you set off.
- Always wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear and bring layers of clothing, as the alpine weather can change very quickly.
- To get onto the glacier itself, a guided trip is essential for safety and equipment.
