Waitomo glowworm caves
Drift silently by boat through underground caverns illuminated by thousands of tiny glowworms.
About this place
The Waitomo Caves are a world-renowned natural attraction, famous for their population of Arachnocampa luminosa, a glowworm species unique to New Zealand. Guided tours lead visitors through magnificent limestone formations, including tall chambers and delicate stalactites and stalagmites. Guides, many of whom are descendants of the original Māori chief who explored the caves, share the history and geology of this subterranean wonder.
The highlight for most is the serene boat ride along the underground Waitomo River. In the silent darkness, the cave ceiling becomes a galaxy of tiny blue-green lights from the thousands of glowworms overhead. This tranquil and magical experience is a unique spectacle of nature and provides a quiet moment of reflection away from the outside world.
