Queenstown & Wānaka
Gibbston Valley wineries
Explore one of New Zealand's most scenic wine regions, famous for its cool-climate Pinot Noir and dramatic gorge setting.
About this place
Known as the 'Valley of the Vines', Gibbston is a compact wine region nestled between rugged schist mountains and the Kawarau Gorge. It's one of the coolest and highest wine-growing regions in the world, creating challenging conditions that produce exceptional Pinot Noir. Many wineries offer cellar door tastings where you can sample the local varieties.
The region is easily accessible from Queenstown and can be explored by car or, for a more active approach, by bicycle along the Gibbston River Trail. This scenic trail connects several wineries, allowing you to cycle between tastings. Beyond Pinot Noir, you'll also find excellent Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Riesling.
