Nelson & Abel Tasman
Golden Bay
Discover a secluded paradise at the top of the South Island, known for its laid-back lifestyle, unique landforms, and long golden beaches.
About this place
Separated from the rest of Nelson by the winding Takaka Hill road, Golden Bay has a distinct, remote feel and a strong artistic and alternative community. The main townships of Takaka and Collingwood serve as hubs for stocking up and exploring the wider area's natural attractions.
The bay is home to extraordinary sights, including Te Waikoropupū Springs, which hold some of the clearest freshwater in the world. Further north, you'll find Farewell Spit, a massive sandspit and internationally significant bird sanctuary, and the wild, windswept Wharariki Beach with its iconic Archway Islands.
Time needed
One to three days
Best time
Summer brings the best weather for the beaches, while the shoulder seasons offer a quieter, peaceful experience.
Practical tips
- The drive over Takaka Hill is steep and winding. Allow plenty of time, use a low gear on descents, and be prepared to pull over to let faster traffic pass.
- Fuel and food supplies are centred in the townships. It's wise to fill up your tank and pantry before heading to more remote parts of the bay.
- Access to Farewell Spit's nature reserve is restricted to protect the fragile ecosystem and birdlife; joining a guided tour is the main way to experience it.
