Mackenzie & Aoraki

Lake Pukaki

This vast, glacial-fed lake is renowned for its intense blue colour and for providing the definitive foreground view of Aoraki/Mount Cook.

About this place

Larger than Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki also owes its striking, opaque blue colour to finely ground 'glacial flour' suspended in its waters. The lake is fed by the Tasman and Hooker Rivers, which drain the major glaciers of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The road running along its western shoreline, State Highway 80, is one of the most scenic drives in the country.

The southern end of the lake offers what is arguably New Zealand’s most famous mountain vista. From the visitor centre viewpoint, Aoraki/Mount Cook appears perfectly framed at the head of the long, blue lake. On a calm day, the mountain’s reflection in the water creates a truly unforgettable and iconic New Zealand scene.
