Tolaga Bay Wharf
At 660 metres long, the Tolaga Bay Wharf is one of the longest in New Zealand, offering a unique walk over the water and a glimpse into the region's history.
About this place
Located about a 45-minute drive north of Gisborne, the wharf at Tolaga Bay is an impressive piece of engineering and local history. Built to allow large coastal trading ships to load and unload goods in a time before reliable roads, it stands today as a testament to the area's past. The walk to the end and back is over a kilometre long, giving you plenty of time to soak in the coastal views and sea air.
The wharf is a popular spot for fishing, and you'll often see locals casting a line into the deep water at its end. The surrounding bay is sheltered, with a beautiful sandy beach perfect for a stroll. Nearby, a walk across the Tolaga Bay Headland (Te Pourewa) offers stunning views back over the wharf and bay.
